King’s Bishop Highlights 3YO Sprinters on Travers Undercard

A group of 11 3YO sprinters set to contest the 7 furlongs King’s Bishop distance on the Travers undercard.

The field is led by the Steve Asmussen runner Holy Boss who brings a four race win streak to the track on Saturday including his most recent victory in the G2 Amsterdam earlier this month at Saratoga. He’ll have to carry his speed an extra 1/2 furlong and he’ll have plenty of company from Runhappy from the outside.

Listed at second choice in the field is Competitive Edge, a three year old son of Kentucky Derby winner Super Saver, and who won last year’s Hopeful Stakes at Saratoga in September off a 10 length maiden victory. He was put away for the remainder of 2014 before returning to win two races in cluding the Pat Day Mile on the Kentucky Derby undercard. He appeared to have a setback in early June when finishing 6th in the Woody Stevens at Belmont but returned to set the pace in the Haskell only to fade to fourth behind Triple Crown winner American Pharoah. Competitive Edge had been favorite in each of his five races before the Haskell and it appears he may be favorite at post time on Saturday.

The King’s Bishop field includes several other noteworthy runners but none more so than Watershed who’s fresh off his maiden score, a first time out victory going 6 furlongs at Saratoga. Watershed is the son of Preakness winner Bernardini and the grandson of Dubai Millenium. He’s trained by Kiaran McLauglin for Godolphin Racing LLC and is listed at 8 to 1.
