Sovereignty, the standout winner of the 2025 Kentucky Derby (G1) and Belmont Stakes (G1), is confirmed to return to competition as a 4-year-old. The Godolphin homebred, who skipped the Breeders’ Cup due to a minor injury sustained after his Belmont triumph, will rejoin Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott’s stable in the coming days to prepare for an exciting campaign.

Sovereignty, a son of champion sire Into Mischief out of the Bernardini mare Queen Caroline, captured the hearts of the racing world with his dominant performances in two legs of the Triple Crown. His Kentucky Derby victory at Churchill Downs came by a commanding 3 1/2 lengths, followed by a gritty win in the Belmont Stakes at Saratoga, where he showcased his stamina over the 1 1/2-mile distance. However, an injury detected post-Belmont forced connections to sideline him for the remainder of 2025, including the Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) at Del Mar, where he had been favored.

The announcement of his return was first reported by outlets including Horse Racing Nation and BloodHorse, signaling a positive recovery and high expectations for the colt’s future. Sovereignty will head to Payson Park in Florida to reunite with Mott, who has overseen his career thus far.

“It will be a good New Year’s present,” Mott told the Paulick Report, expressing optimism about the horse’s condition and readiness. The trainer noted that Sovereignty has been recuperating well at Godolphin’s Jonabell Farm in Lexington, Kentucky, and is expected to arrive in Florida “in about a week.”

Godolphin racing manager Michael Banahan echoed the enthusiasm in comments to BloodHorse, stating that the decision to race on stems from the colt’s strong recovery and potential to compete at the highest level. “He’s done everything right so far, and we’re excited to see what he can do as a mature horse,” Banahan said.

While specific targets for 2026 have not been announced, speculation points to major stakes like the Dubai World Cup (G1) as a possible starting point. His return adds intrigue to what promises to be a competitive older horse division, potentially setting up clashes with other 2025 standouts.
