American Pharoah leads Travers Stakes Field
- Updated: August 27, 2015
Here’s the field for Saturday’s G1 Travers Stakes at Saratoga and as expected American Pharoah will run for what will be a purse of $1.6 million making this year’s Travers the richest running of the historic race for three-year olds going the classic distance of 1 1/4 miles on the dirt.
The Travers Stakes is part of the Breeders’ Cup Challenge Win and You’re In Series and if anyone other than American Pharoah wins on Saturday, they will have earned a guaranteed spot in the Breeders’ Cup Classic at Keeneland in October.
The field was drawn on Tuesday evening and American Pharoah will break from post position 2 as the “overwhelming” favorite of the the 10 runners who will compete in the race.
Frosted is listed as the second choice at 6 to 1 of his runner-up finish behind American Pharoah in his Triple Crown winning performance in the Belmont Stakes, and his second place finish behind Texas Red in the Jim Dandy earlier this month at Saratoga.
Texas Red, winner of last year’s Breeders’ Cup Juvenile at Santa Anita, and who was well touted for the 3YO classics, was sidelined after the BC Juvenile and was taken off the Triple Crown trail. He returned in February with a second place finish in the G2 San Vicente and was put on the shelf again. In July he was second in the G3 Dwyer at Belmont and won his last start at Saratoga in the Jim Dandy at 1 1/8 miles beating out only three other runners. The Travers will be a big test for him and can easily see him rounding out the exacta behind the Pharoah.
