Calgary Cat returns to defend title in Kennedy Road at Woodbine

$200,000 G2 Kennedy Road is today’s feature race of the day from Woodbine.

12 runners are set to go 6 furlong on the all-weather at Woodbine led by last year’s winner Calgary Cat who returns to defend his title as the 2 to 1 favorite. Trained by Kevin Attard who is .25% winner’s at the current Woodbine meet, Calgary Cat took a similar path to this race last year winning the G3 Bold Venture by 3 lengths going 6 1/2 F to earn his first career graded stakes victory. He followed that race with a third place finish in the G2 Nearctic on the turf before taking the Kennedy Road. He’s consistent but not sure he’s the same horse he was at the end of last year and if he wins he’ll have to do it widest of all.

Other Contenders

Second choice on the morning line is Stacked Deck who was 10th in the 2015 Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint last month. Before that he was 3rd in the G3 Woodford at Keeneland and took this year’s running of the G3 Bold Venture defeating Calgary Cat. Gets a new rider in Contreras who is riding .20% winners at the meet and has a positive ROI of $2.12 when riding for trainer Barbara Minshall over the past two seasons. 6 F may not be his best distance (1 for 3 lifetime) but his last two races make him a strong contender.

Bye Bye Bernie, a 5 YO son of Bernstein comes in as the third choice in early odds off his first place finish in the G2 Nearctic last month. His only other start at Woodbine was a 7th place finish in a non-graded stakes back in April. He’s 6 to 1 with Hernandez who has 7 wins in 16 mounts at the meet for a whopping .44% success rate and has one winner in one attempt and an ROI of $46.10 for trainer Brendan Walsh.

Worth Mentioning

Summation Time will be ridden by Alan Garcia for trainer Christophe Clement. He was second behind Bye Bye Bernie in the Nearctic last time and has only one race on the all-weather in which he finished 4th in a $100,000 stakes at Presque Isle Downs in June. He’s 3 for 9 lifetime, all on the turf.

Glenville Gardens is the sleeper in here. Started his career here in September of last year in the $140,000 Swynford at 7 furlongs as the runner-up. Returned as the heavy favorite a month later and was blocked in the stretch, finishing second in a race that was moved to the main track. Finally got the maiden win last November going 1 1/16 on the main in the $132K Display Stakes. Ran twice at Gulfstream in $75 OCN1X-N at 1 mile and either something happened or he just flat out hated the track. Returned to Woodbine this past September and was claimed by Attard for $40K from a NW2L race he won at today’s distance earning a 77 Beyer. Came back a month later to win an OC62K/N2X-N at 7 F earning an 84. Won the Labeeb on the turf 15 days later on a yielding surface at 1 mile earning a 97 which is this race’s highest last race Beyer. Shot at 10 to 1.
