Small but talented field assembled
A field of five horses will contest the 1 mile Sham Stakes in DRF’s feature Race of the Day on the New Year’s Day card at Santa Anita.
The Sham is one of four stakes races carded for opening day of the 2022 calendar year at Santa Anita, and it is one of three stakes races carded around the country for Kentucky Derby hopefuls looking to earn Derby points.
Baffert trainee Rockefeller (8-5) opens as the slight favorite over his stablemate Newgrange (2-1) when bets are taken on the G3 race with a pool of $100,000.
With 40% of the horses entered for the Sham, Baffert appears to have the advantage over the other three rival trainers.
Rockefeller will be making his fourth career start and first since an easy front running win in the G3 Nashua at Belmont.
Stablemate Newgrange was a first out winner at Del Mar in his only start.
Post time for the Sham Stakes is scheduled for 6:05 PM ET and will go as race 7 on the 10 race card on New Year’s Day.
