G2 Mathis Brothers Mile One of Three Graded Stakes On the Opening Day Card at Santa Anita

The $200,000 Mathis Brothers Mile will go as the 9th race on opening day of the Winter meet at Santa Anita.

Eleven three-year-olds have been entered to go the 1 mile distance. The race appears to be wide-open with Conquest Enforcer listed at 7 to 2 in the morning line.

Conquest Enforcer is a winner of nearly $400,000 and will be making his first start in southern California for trainer Philip D’Amato.  He comes in with 4 wins and 2 thirds from seven starts at Woodbine and Belmont against non-graded stakes company.

He’s sitting on a best of 120 bullet move going 5/8’s in :59 here on December 19 and gets a new rider in Flavien Prat.

Mathis Brothers Mile Field, Odds, Analysis

Here’s the rest of the field with morning line odds and the Wiz Capper analysis:

  1. Mittersill – 8 to 1. Irish bred runner started first 5 races of his career overseas. Broke his maiden going 1 mile in final race across the pond before making his way to the U.S. in September. Was second here at the distance in a OC$75k NW1X in October before notching a fifth second place finish in the restricted Let It Ride stakes. Rosario up.
  2. Blackjackcat – 4 to 1. Removed the hood to finish 6th last time out in the G1 Hollywood Derby. Cuts back to a distance he’ll like and Smith stays with him. Like the fact that he broke his maiden here going 6 1/2 on the turf in the summer.
  3. Moonlight Drive –  6 to 1. 2 for 2 on the Santa Anita turf including a first time outing in the states back in February at this distance. Twice beaten in graded company at Del Mar going long and the cutback puts him in the thick of it at the end.
  4. Conquest Enforcer – 7 to 2. Exits the 6f G2 Nearctic at Woodbine back in October. Sitting on bullet here and will be the one to catch. Keep in mind that it’s been raining in SoCal so grass may be a little softer than usual.
  5. Fabozzi – 20 to 1. Two wins on the turf including a maiden score here in June going 1 mile on the lead for $75k tag. Won last outing at Del Mar earlier this month at long odds. Gets new rider and steps up in class.
  6. Isotherm – 6 to 1. Ninth in the Hollywood Derby a few weeks ago. Has done most of his running in New York where his only two wins were on the inner tracks at Saratoga and Belmont. Added Lasix three back for a second place finish in a G2 at Laurel. Another that’s cutting back and gets Desormeaux.
  7. Path of David – 20 to 1. Was 90 to 1 and beat one horse in the Hollywood Derby last time out so it’s hard to see how he can turn it around against several of the same runners in here. Talamo was aboard for his only two wins – both at this distance – and is back up.
  8. Frank Conversation – 4 to 1. This was the Wiz Capper selection for the Hollywood Derby off his G2 winning performance two back when removing the hood. He’s cutting back today and that should suit him nicely.
  9. Blackout – 12 to 1. Comes in from the east for Casse after an 8th place finish in the G3 Commonwealth at Churchill last time out. Won three in the UK before coming stateside. Only $61,000 in 4 wins.
  10. Defiantly – 15 to 1. Won the Let It Ride two back before finishing last in the Hollywood Derby next time out at 57 to 1. Looks over matched.
  11. Tusk – 15 to 1. Was second to Frank Conversation last time out in the G3 El Camino Real Derby at Golden Gate on the all-weather. Only a maiden score by a nose at Del Mar over a year ago.
