La Brea Stakes: Odds, Analysis, Free PPs
La Brea Stakes kicks off opening day at Santa Anita
Today is opening day at Santa Anita and there are several graded stakes races for the after Christmas card including the G1 La Brea for three-year-old fillies going 7 furlongs for a purse of $300,000.
Eight runners were entered for the La Brea.
Finley’sluckycharm will open as the 5 to 2 favorite having won 5 of her 6 life time starts for trainer Bret Calhoun who comes in from Kentucky for the La Brea.
Seventh on her only graded stakes try at Fair Grounds, Finley’sluckycharm is the daughter of Twirling Candy who won the Malibu Stakes here at 3 when defeating the extremely fast Smiling Tiger.
La Brea Field, Odds, Analysis
Here’s the full field of runners for the La Brea along with the Wiz Capper analysis of the race:
- Lunar Express – 20 to 1. Daughter of Malibu Moon has two wins from seven starts and hasn’t been off the board yet. Broke her maiden here going 6 1/2 in July and took her most recent start at Del Mar going 1 mile to earn her highest Beyer 93.
- Lightstream – 2 to 1. Winner of 4 races with a second and a third in as many starts, she’s the ML favorite with over $450,000 in earnings. Comes in from the east coast for the first time, having won the G2 Raven Run in her last start at Keeneland. Hasn’t been out in over 2 months.
- Finley’sluckycharm – 5 to 2. Only loss was the G2 Rachel Alexandra at Fair Grounds in February at 29 to 1. She’s second choice in here off a three-race win streak while earning triple-digit Beyer speed figures including the field’s highest 108 last time out. Catch her to win.
- Constellation – 6 to 1. Won a $30,000 stakes at Turf Paradise last time out in her first race on the west coast. Kentucky bred won three races in New York but may have found a new home in the barn of trainer Hollendorfer for good.
- Coniah – 15 to 1. Beaten by Lightstream in the Raven Run two back when third, she returned to finish fourth last time out in the Zia Park Oaks. Returns to Santa Anita where best effort was a second place finish in an OC$80K NW1X where you could have taken her for the tag. Stretchs out to an unmanageable distance today.
- Chao Chom – 8 to 1. California bred will be facing open company for the first time after winning the Betty Grable last time out at Del Mar. 0 for 2 at Santa Anita.
- Enola Gray – 9 to 2. Was second in the aforementioned Betty Grable last time out and gets a new rider in Mike Smith. Was $0.10 on the dollar that day. Something tells me that race will prove to be a ‘key’ race and this horse will show speed from the break. Hmm.
- Perfect Pic – 6 to 1. Finished first, second and third in that order in only three life time starts. Will show speed from the outside.
