Malibu Stakes Preview with Odds

Malibu Stakes kicks off Santa Anita Winter Meet

Santa Anita Park’s Winter Meet begins Monday, December 26 with several graded stakes races including the G1 Malibu Stakes for three-year-olds going 7 furlongs on the main track.

Early scratch: #1 Navy Hymn

Malibu Stakes Field, Odds, Analysis by Wiz Capper

  1. Navy Hymn – SCRATCHED
  2. Mind Your Biscuits – 5 to 2 in the morning line for trainer Falcone who does well when giving a leg up to Rosario over the past two years. Horse exits the Breeders’ Cup Sprint when finishing third beaten a length while closing into the 6 furlong distance of the Sprint. Came back with a bullet best of 62 workout a week ago going 4f in :47.20. Trainer does well with graded company. NY bred runner hasn’t won in three tries at the distance but does have a win over the mud at Aqueduct. It’s been raining in Southern California – ALOT! – but expect clearing skies on Monday.
  3. Semper Fortis – 12 to 1 for Team Reddam. Eligible for NW3L and is 0 for 4 at Santa Anita. Horse broke maiden for a $62,500 claiming tag at Del Mar going 5/8’s then won next out at 1 mile — both races were over a year ago. Was second in the Zia Park Derby at 1 1/16 miles a month ago (NOTE that O’Neill made an equipment change and removed the blinkers). 7 furlongs should suit him nicely but will need plenty of pace to run at down the lane.
  4. Ten Blessings – 3 to 1 for Baffert and Bejarano who was aboard for both life time wins here at Santa Anita. Has the field’s highest last race Beyer 106 when he bet 11 other runners here at this distance a month ago. Has two bullet 6f moves over the past two weeks as he makes his stakes debut in this G1 event for top team.
  5. Jazzy Times – 8 to 1. Beaten favorite in last two for Baffert and Zayat Stables. Tried to steal it two back in the $100K Damascus before tiring to finish second to next out winner going 7/8’s. On the board in 3 attempts at Santa Anita and will be on the front end in here but expect him to tire late.
  6. Who’s Out – 20 to 1. Was a winner at Santa Anita in the summer when he passed the tiring runner to his inside. Added blinkers two back and was a beaten favorite going 6f here for Hollendorfer. Was 8th in the G3 Gallant Bob at Parx in September beaten six lengths by Mind Your Biscuits.
  7. Sharp Azteca – Son of turf sprinting sire Freud has 3 wins at 1 mile and took the 7f City of Laurel in his last start. Won the G3 Pat Day Mile at Churchill this past summer then was fourth in the G2 Woody Stephens at Belmont as the 3 to 1 favorite. Adds pace to the race and will have his work cut out for him facing the local speed in here.
  8. Mor Spirit – 6 to 1. Another who will go for Baffert and gets HOF Smith after facing the likes of Kentucky Derby winner Nyquist and Preakness winner Exaggerator this past summer. Won the G3 Robert B Lewis here in February and is the only G1 winner in the race having won the Los Al Futurity last Christmas. Look out.
  9. Awesome Banner – 8 to 1. Six time winner comes in for trainer Mark Casse off a DQ in his last start. Added two wins in restricted races at Gulfstream to a G3 win in the Hutcheson and a G2 win in the Swale. Gets top rider in Leparoux but will have his hands full in here.
  10. Horse Greedy – 30 to 1. Owns a win and a second here as he steps up into uncharted territory.
