Concert Tour returns for Cox

In the DRF feature Race of the Day at Oaklawn Park, a field of nine older horses led by Concert Tour will go to post in the 1 mile 5th Season Stakes for a purse of $150,000. Get free pps.
Here’s the field from the rail out with morning line odds, jockey, trainer, and comments.
- Thomas Shelby (5-1), D Cohen, Diodoro Robertino – Winner of 10 lifetime, his front-running style beyond this 1 mile distance has served him well here in the past. But it failed to get him home first in a 1 1/8 miles stakes here last month when second. Cutback in distance will probably have him stalking Concert Tour as the only other speed. Consistent 6-year-old son of Curlin that lacks previous real class competition.
- Rated R Superstar (8-1), D Cabrera, Federico Villafranco – Elder statesman of the field at 9, he’s won over $1.1 million in his career. He’s 0 for 6 at this distance and was 6th in this race in 2020. Deep closing style will not suit him well at this level.
- Snapper Sinclair (6-1), R Vazquez, Steve Asmussen – Richest runner in the field, he’s won nearly $2 million, mostly in turf races. He was a nail-biting second in this race in 2020 when the track was muddy. And the last time he was here he took a 1 mile OC 80K on a fast track. Toss the two back try in the BC Mile when everything went wrong for him at the break.
- Necker Island (9-2), F Arrieta, Chris Hartman – Finished 9th in the 2020 Kentucky Derby. Since then he’s won three times, most recently sprinting to victory in the 6 furlong Bet On Sunshine at Churchill two back. Versatile type should be in mid-pack but trouble seems to find him.
- Concert Tour (5-2), J Rosario, Brad Cox – Was on the Road to the Derby last year winning his first three including the G2 Rebel when under Baffert’s care. West homebred failed to complete the mission as the heavy favorite in the G1 Arkansas Derby and was beaten a head for second by Caddo River who recently won a OC50K NW3L here. Troubled trip last time out in the Preakness over 8 months ago. Will go first time for Cox and without blinkers. Obvious contender.
- Atoka (15-1), L Contreras, D Wayne Lukas – Finally got the maiden win in his 14th try and has won twice since including a default win last time out here when placed first at this distance after the DQ of the aforementioned Caddo River. Consider that his only two stakes tries were run without Lasix which he gets today and seems to need. Lukas isn’t doing bad at the meet and has this guy on the right track. Still, he’s NW4L eligible.
- Long Range Toddy (10-1), J Court, Dallas Stewart – Once again will carry Court for the 11th time in a row and the pair have not seen the winner’s circle in that two year span. The last time he did win was in 2019 going 1 1/16th miles here. Hard to see him at this price.
- Silver Prospector (10-1), R Santana, Steve Asmussen – Will make his first start in 8 months and Santana will be back in the saddle for his return. Takes considerable drop in class from five graded stakes in a row. Working good and his last win was 1 1/8 miles at Churchill off a long layoff. Beyers fit but distance is a concern. The PICK.
- Mucho (7-2), F Geroux, John Ortiz – Will make his first career start around two turns. Will have to go early to get position from the outside. Last three Beyers have him on the pace.
Post time for DRF’s Race of the Day is scheduled for 4:46 PM ET and will go as race 8 on the 9 race card for Saturday, January 15, 2022 at Oaklawn Park.
