Go Maggie Go, Gone in Black-Eyed Susan

Go Maggie Go broke alertly, set all the pace and goes on to win the 2016 running of the Black-Eyed Susan Stakes at Pimlico on Friday before a record breaking crowd of 47,956 people who bet nearly $1 million more than they did in 2015.

Watch Go Maggie Go win the Black-Eyed Susan

It was a perfect performance by Go Maggie Go and jockey Luis Saez who nursed the speed of Go Maggie Go getting a quarter in 23.49 seconds, a half-mile in 48.83, and six furlongs in 1:13.54.

By the time they turned for home, Go Maggie Go had sprinted clear of her nearest rival Kinsley Kisses on her way to victory in a final time of 1:51.13 for the 1 1/8 mile distance and rewarded her backers with a $5.60 win payoff.

The rematch between Go Maggie Go and Land Over Sea, the 2nd and 4th place finishers in the Kentucky Oaks two weeks ago never materialized as Land Over Sea was bumped around early and could never get into the race eventually finishing a distant 6th.

Go Maggie Go is trained by Dale Romans, who was involved in an accident the night of the Kentucky Derby and continues to recover. Her win on Friday provided a bit of relief for Romans from the pain he still feels from the accident. And a refreshing outlook to Cherry Wine’s start in the Preakness where a win over Nyquist would give him a double dose of victory and the sweet taste of success having beaten the connections of Nyquist on both days of the Preakness weekend.

Rounding out the top three finishers in the Black-Eyed Susan was the Roman’s trained Ma Can Do It at 50-1 who edged out Kinsley Kisses for second. Finishing in order was Dothraki Queen, Mom’s On Strike, Land Over Sea, She’s a Warrior, Downdraft, Flora Dora, Midnight On Oconee, A P Majetstic, and Double Entendre.
