Santa Anita Derby 2024 entries are set and post positions have been drawn for this Kentucky Derby prep race to be run at Keeneland on Saturday. A field of 11 three-year-old colts is set to compete in this $1 million, Grade 1 race, which serves as a crucial steppingstone on the Road to the Kentucky Derby.
The top five finishers in the Santa Anita Derby will vie for as many as 200 valuable qualifying points toward a secure spot in the starting gate on Saturday, May 4, in the 2024 Kentucky Derby.
Imagination, trained by Bob Baffert, has been made the 8-5 morning line favorite.
Imagination is 2-3-0 in five career starts. His biggest win came last time out in the G2 San Felipe Stakes in a four horse race when he prevailed by a narrow head and will have to go another 1/16 miles longer.
A son of Into Mischief, Imagination will break from post position 4 under jockey Frankie Dettori who was in the saddle for his San Felipe victory.
Other top contenders include Stronghold at 5-2 odds, and stablemate Wynstock who won the G2 Los Alamitos Futurity two back for Baffert.
Trained by Phil D’Amato, Stronghold enters off a victory in the Grade 3 Sunland Derby on February 8 at Sunland Park. The son of Ghostzapper is 2-3-0 in five career starts and was runner up behind Wynstock in the Los Alamitos Futurity.
Wynstock, trained by Bob Baffert, was in traffic over a muddy track in the Southwest Stakes last time out at Oaklawn and stopped behind eventual winner Mystik Dan. The son of Solomini is 2-0-0 in five career start. He won a 1 mile maiden sprint by 7 lengths at Santa Anita before his Los Alamitos victory.
