- Updated: April 4, 2024
Wood Memorial 2024 entries are set and post positions have been drawn for this Kentucky Derby prep race to be run at Aqueduct on Saturday. A field of 13 three-year-old colts is set to compete in this $1 million, Grade 1 race, which serves as a crucial steppingstone on the Road to the Kentucky Derby.
The top five finishers in the Wood Memorial will vie for as many as 200 valuable qualifying points toward a secure spot in the starting gate on Saturday, May 4, in the 2024 Kentucky Derby.
Deterministic, trained by Christophe Clement, has been made the 7-5 morning line favorite.
Deterministic is 2-0-0 in two career starts. He was the last out winner of the G3 Gotham win came last time out in the G2 San Felipe Stakes in a four horse race when he prevailed by a narrow head and will have to go another 1/16 miles longer.
A son of Liam’s Map, Deterministic will break from post position 4 under Joel Rosario who was in the saddle for his Gotham victory.
Other top contenders include Tuscan Sky at 4-1 odds, and Resilience at 6-1.
Trained by Todd Pletcher, Tuscan Sky enters off a victory in a $100,000 NW1X optional claimer at Fair Grounds on February 17. The son of Vino Rosso is 2-0-0 in two career starts and won his maiden opener by 5 lengths in a 6 furlong sprint at Aqueduct.
Resilience, trained by Bill Mott, finished 4th over a sloppy track in the G2 Risen Star last time out at Fair Grounds behind Sierra Leone and the Louisiana Derby winner, Catching Freedom. The son of Into Mischief is 1-1-1 in five career starts. He won a 1 1/16 miles maiden race by 4 lengths at Gulfstream Park two back for his only win.

PP Horse, jockey, trainer, odds
1. Resilience, John Velazquez, Bill Mott, 6-1
Adds blinkers since his 4th place finish behind Louisiana Derby winner Catching Freedom LTO in the Risen Star. He is 1-1-1 in five career starts and Lasix was his friend in maiden victory at Gulfstream two back. Son of Into Mischief won’t have that benefit in the Wood.
2. El Grande O, Dylan Davis, Linda Rice, 8-1
Trainer, Linda Rice, is a dominant force on the NYRA circuit and hasn’t shied away from sending out this son of Take Charge Indy to compete against other 3-year-old Kentucky Derby hopefuls in New York. He’s 3-5-2 in 11 lifetime starts, and although he’s been close in two G3 his only victories came against New York bred horses.
3. Lonesome Boy, Adam Bowman, Hugo Padilla, 50-1
4. Deterministic, Joel Rosario, Christophe Clement, 7-5
Undefeated winner of the G3 Gotham in his second career start. Trainer is winning at a 22% clip. His sire, Liam’s Map, was 6-2-0 in eight career starts, winning the 2015 Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile and the G1 Woodward that year. Obvious favorite.
5. Protective, Kendrick Carmouche, Todd Pletcher, 30-1
6. Evening News, Jareth Loveberry, 20-1
7. Merit, Edwin Gonzalez, Saffie Joseph Jr., 20-1
8. Elysian Meadows, Jose Lezcano, Bill Mott, 15-1
9. Tuscan Sky, Manny Franco, Todd Pletcher, 4-1
Undefeated Pletcher trainee will face his biggest test and first start against graded company. Both wins came in the mud, including his maiden voyage victory here at Aqueduct. Sire, Vino Rosso, won the 2019 Breeders’ Cup Classic at Santa Anita. Like his chances for an upset.
10. Gettysburg Address, Emmanuel Esquivel, Dallas Stewart, 30-1
11. Society Man, Luis Rivera Jr., Danny Gargan, 30-1
12. Deposition, Dexter Haddock, Uriah St. Lewis, 50-1
13. Uncle Heavy, Mychel Sanchez, Robert Reid Jr., 8-1
