Note: Check the weather forecast for New Orleans on New Year’s Eve
Here’s the field of 14 runners entered to go post ward from the rail out:
- Sharp Henny – 6 to 1. Broke maiden here a month ago going 5 1/2 for 31% trainer Stall. Draws the rail for the second start of her career. Rider Hernandez picked this miss over stablemate to her outside.
- Quarter Carat – 5 to 1. Was heavy favorite in defeat at Delta two back in a 6 1/2 MSW. Returned to break maiden next out here going 1 mile. Cuts back and will need some pace to run at for high percentage jockey/trainer combo.
- Singing a Song – 8 to 1. Faced horse to her inside in last two starts. Was a length back of that runner time before last and made the lead going the 1 mile distance to finish 1/2 lengths behind the winner but 5 1/2 in front of the third place horse who goes in here as well. However, still a maiden vs. winners. Catch her when she drops back vs. non-winners.
- Suzie’s Dream – 30 to 1. Gets new rider in Saez for low percentage trainer who sends this one out off three dismal performances. Broke maiden at Louisiana Downs going 4 1/2 in July.
- Actif Storm – 20 to 1. With rain in the forecast the thing that stands out for this filly is the fact that she broke her maiden in the Shine Young Stakes at Evangeline in the slop at 35 to 1 last July. And she’s 0 for 4 on fast tracks. Added blinkers two back for low percentage connections.
- Sashimi Blaster – 4 to 1. Only runner with two wins and never off the board in 5 career starts. Gets new rider in Albarado off back to back wins in last two. Broke maiden two back in MSW at Delta going 7 1/2 as favorite. Returned to win a stakes at 12 to 1 going 1 mile on the Delta Jackpot under card. Cuts back and will need something to run at but if she can close at Delta, she should be able to close down the long Fair Grounds stretch.
- Princess Samurai – 6 to 1. Started career finishing second as favorite at Delta going 5 furlongs. Returned in victory here last time out going 6 vs. full field of 12. Not fond of next out runners after maiden score but love the fact that she broke her maiden here at this distance for top connections. Catch her to win.
- Foxy Miss – 6 to 1. Favorite in all three lifetime starts for top connections. Was second by a neck going 5 1/2 here a month ago, then was third by 6 as heavy favorite in race won by Quarter Carat. The race two back was fastest speed figure for this bunch but can’t see her improving 6 lengths off last start. Adds blinkers.
- Southern Gold – 20 to 1. Maiden vs. winners for trainer who is 1 for 2 at the meet. Faced runner to her inside in career opener finishing 5 lengths behind that one. Finished 3rd last time out but moved up on DQ. Adds blinkers today.
- Mr. Al’s Gal – 12 to 1. Took 5f maiden voyage at Evangeline by 1/2 length over today’s favorite. Was 18 to 1 that day and barely hung on after opening 4 length lead in the stretch. Took 5 months off and returned to run second by 5 at same distance in state bred allowance at Delta. Will be pushed from the start but the added furlong will prove too much.
- Star Guitarist – 30 to 1. Daughter of Louisiana Champion Star Guitar will be making the second start of her career after a poor performance here at 43 to 1, three weeks ago. Trainer has 1 win from 5 starts and Riquelme sticks with her. Stranger things have happened but sire was not a sprinter.
- Miss Sid N Say – 12 to 1. Was second to Sashimi Blaster three back then returned to break maiden next time out at Delta going 6 1/2. Cuts back off a 3rd place finish in a 7f $40K allowance for NW2L in Vinton. Connections could strike at anytime.
- Hot and Ready – 20 to 1. Sitting on a 3f bullet move at Oaklawn a week ago. Started career two back at Louisiana Downs in a state bred MSW and finished 4th. Returned several months later at Remington for new connections going 6 1/2 vs. open company fillies and was 5th beaten 6 lengths. Gets top jock and blinkers.
- What’s the Point – 12 to 1. Took $25k maiden claiming voyage here 4 weeks ago going 6 furlongs for top connections. Final time comparable to Princess Samurai’s win here at same distance. Draws widest and eligible to improve.
