Kentucky Derby week in full swing under the Twin Spires
Kentucky Derby week is in full swing after opening night of the 2016 Spring Meet kicked off Saturday, April 30 with 11 races ran under the lights and over a sloppy Churchill Downs track.
Bob Baffert’s trainee Toews On Ice took the opening night featured WIlliam Walker Stakes, run for the second time, at 7 furlongs on the main track.
Toews On Ice began his young racing career on the Road to the Kentucky Derby only to have found himself limited in his ability to get the distances of the Derby prep races necessary to prepare him for the 1 1/4 miles Run for the Roses.
Toews On Ice is a 3YO son of Archarcharch who won the 2011 running of the G1 Arkansas Derby at the 1 1/8 mile distance but finished 15th in the Kentucky Derby that year and was retired soon after.
Kentucky Oaks Post Position Draw
The 2016 Kentucky Oaks post position draw happens tomorrow with the Road to the Oaks leader Terra Promessa headlining the Friday card and expected to get plenty of attention as the favorite. We’ll have the full race analysis and selections for the Oaks after the field is drawn.
