Ohio Derby: Odds, Analysis + Free PPs
Free past performances for the 2019 Ohio Derby on Saturday, June 22, 2019 at Thistledown in Ohio. Courtesy of Brisnet. See last row of table below for Brisnet PPs.
| PP | Horse | Trainer | Odds |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Math Wizard | Joseph | 8-1 |
| Connections must have thought they hit the jackpot when they grabbed this guy for $25K out of an 18 length winning effort going 1 mile at Gulfstream in January. Reminiscent of Maximum Security, he took a $16K maiden race in his prior start by almost 7. But he’s no Maximum Security! Two back Wood Memorial effort finishing 4 back of Tacitus was a good try at 64-1. And his last out try as the favorite in the Oaklawn Invitational was also competitive. Hood comes off for this and the race lost is flavor with the departure of Global Campaign. Should be part of the ticket but hard to see him getting his third lifetime win here. | |||
| 2 | Owendale | Cox | 9-5 |
| After finishing third behind War of Will in the Preakness, he’s sitting on a 5f bullet move at Churchill in preparation for this. He’s a deep closer shortening up but his three wins came at 1 1/16th or less so distance shouldn’t be an issue. Like the fact that he broke his maiden at Indiana and won at two other tracks. Given War of Will’s performance in the Belmont this guy could throw in a clunker so caution should be used in the presence of Long Range Toddy. | |||
| 3 | Long Range Toddy | Asmussen | 5-2 |
| Toss his last two in the slop and see that he beat the Baffert runner Improbable who though turned out to be a dud to date, it’s ‘probable’ he’d be favorite in here. Skipped the Preakness while connections targeted this race after his troubled trip in the Kentucky Derby. Running style should have him forwardly placed behind the two pacesetters to the outside and ready to take over down the stretch. Can he hold off Owendale? We’ll find out. | |||
| 4 | Going for Gold | Quartarolo | 20-1 |
| Angles are everything in horse racing. Equipment change is often a good angle for a change in performance and he gets blinkers again after turning in his worst performance of four when he wore them last time. To his credit, that was in the G3 Sam Davis at Tampa. He’s a maiden going against graded stakes winners and a 20-1 morning line is stretching it. | |||
| 5 | Bethlehem Road | Curry | 6-1 |
| Speedy type is undefeated in three starts at Parx and expect him to test the rest from the start while the runner to his outside attempts to extend his winning streak to three. Despite his success climbing the ranks at Parx, his first graded try won’t be easy with the presence of Paolucci’s pair. | |||
| 6 | Dare Day | Radosevich | 15-1 |
| Owner Paolucci has more money than sense as he sends out two horses with the same running style. Won his maiden voyage going 6F at Belterra – the site of the now defunct River Downs track in Cincinnati. Returned to take a state bred ALW at Thistledown on May 21 beating 4 others and wearing blinkers going 5 1/2. Should be hard pressed from the start and like the fact that he’s been successful over the track. Still, he’ll try to take his game to the next level against Triple Crown trail types while looking to stay undefeated. Sire was a Baffert trainee who won three races in his career – the longest being the 1 1/16th Affirmed at Santa Anita in ’14. | |||
