The Official Field for the Houston Ladies Classic (G3)

PP Horse Trainer Odds
1 Song From Above Stephanie Herb 50-1
Amazing what people do for money. This is a $300,000 purse so the connections of this NW3L daughter of Lucky Pulpit who was claimed for $8,500 from her last start, and had fallen into even lower level claiming races, will travel to take on seasoned graded stakes runners. Price says it all.
2 Remedy Brad Cox 3-1
Ok, ok. So this miss is too a NW3L but she’s got distance experience under her belt, unlike the ‘Song From Above’. After making the mover from turf to dirt in a 1 mile event at Indiana Downs which she won by 5+, she took on G3 company at Remington in their Oaks and finished second before traveling to Aqueduct for the Comely. According to the DRF running line she lost all footing at the start which put her in a never before position of being 8 lengths off the pace instead of leading the way as in her previous efforts. She finished second and cuts back for this one with a big chance to get her third lifetime win.
3 Viva Forever Karl Broberg 12-1
In contrast to the previous two entrants she’ll be seeking her 10th career victory for her new handler who started one horse in a stakes race this year to no avail. Sam Houston tends to play close to the pace when the track is fast (there’s no rain in the forecast). Doesn’t have the early foot to keep the pace honest and her only graded start in the Molly Pitcher, which came on the heels of a four-race-win-streak last summer, was a dismal try. She did bounce back to win back-to-back starts at Parx which seems to be her preferred track.
4 Moonlit Garden Christopher Davis 8-1
Took a long time for her to break her maiden but she finally did it on her 12th try over a sloppy Fair Grounds surface last March. Appears to have turned the corner in that one as she won NTO at Keeneland going two-turns in an ALWN1X for $75K. First attempt in graded company was a bust in the G3 Matron at Arlington — over the fake stuff. Would be easy to toss except that she tried a G3 at Aqueduct two back and could see them all at the wire. Like that Ortiz will travel south to take the mount on a horse he rode twice to victory in two of three lifetime wins.
5 Heavenhasmynikki Ron Hess 15-1
‘Hooch’ Racing Stables runner will go for the first time for Hess off an over-matched outing in the G1 La Brea on opening day at Santa Anita. Ohio state bred specialist has enough early speed to add pressure on the front-end. The addition of blinkers two-back to win sprinting, and local rider Melancon in the saddle, adds intrigue but distance concerns abound for this one.
6 Prado’s Sweet Ride Gary Scherer 6-1
Eight-time-winner of 1/2 a million dollars has been stabled at the Fair Grounds this winter and will make the 5 hour trip west with the best chance of upsetting the favorite. Geroux has been in the saddle twice on this heretofore turf specialist (6 of 8 lifetime wins on the lawn) — once in a failed effort in a turf sprint as the favorite at Indiana way back when — and most recently was given the leg up on the way to victory cruising on the lead in the G2 Fall City Handicap at Churchill on the dirt. This race is on the dirt and expect her to be very competitive in here with top jockey.
7 Midnight Bisou Steve Asmussen 3-5
And then, there’s the 3-5 favorite. Her last six out of seven have been G1 trips against the toughest in the three-year-old class of 2018. She was thrice beaten by the recently crowned 2018 Eclipse champion and winner of the Breeder’s Cup Distaff Monomoy Girl. 4 for 4 at the distance, she’ll have HOF jockey Mike Smith aboard and should make easy work of this field.
