The field for the 2021 Belmont Stakes has gone from a possible 13 to a probable list of 9 with only 1 possible for the 153rd running of the third and final leg of America’s Triple Crown series.

Probable field for the Belmont

Essential Quality – fourth in the Derby, skipped the Preakness in favor of running in what will be his longest test to date — the 1 1/2 miles distance of the Belmont. Finishing a combined 1 length and a head back of the top three finishers at the 1 1/4 miles distance of the Derby, he’ll gain several spots in the starting gate from his post position 14 break and has the tactical speed to be in the race early. Son of Tapit who has sired three recent Belmont Stakes winners: Tonalist (2014), Creator (2016) and Tapwrit (2017). Strong connections and will go as the favorite on Saturday.

Hot Rod Charlie – Finished a head better than Essential Quality in the Kentucky Derby for trainer Doug O’Neill who passed the Preakness in favor of the speed favoring, sweeping turns of the Belmont. Has attracted the Preakness winning rider Flavien Prat to handle the reins on this son of the 2013 Preakness winner Oxbow who finished second to Palace Malice in that year’s Belmont. Will be sent from the start.

Known Agenda – Drew the dreaded 1 hole for the Derby and was relegated to an also ran 9th place finish in the field of 19. Son of Curlin, who was defeated by Rags to Riches to become the first ever filly to win the Belmont in 2007, he’ll get a much better trip this time.

France Go De Ina – arrived stateside to compete in the Preakness after a trip around the track in the UAE Derby. Finished sixth behind 12-1 winner Rebel’s Romance in Dubai and seventh in the Preakness with Rosario up for both. He doesn’t stick it out with this guy for the Belmont which is telling. Gets new rider Ricardo Santana on Saturday.

Rock Your World – Winner of the Santa Anita Derby for trainer Sadler, he was on a roll winning his first three starts before a 17th place finish in the Kentucky Derby after a troubled start. The son of Candy Ride will be another contending for the lead in what will be a crowded and contentious pace scenario.

Rombauer – Said to have benefited with a dream trip to win the Preakness, he’s getting plenty of play from bettors around the world as the second choice in early odds at Bovada. Preakness winning rider Prat departs for Hot Rod Charlie, who loses Rosario to Rock Your World, and John Velazquez will get the leg up from trainer Mike McCarthy who returns to his home base at Belmont and knows how to win races in New York.

Rebel’s Romance – UAE Derby (G2) winner gets HOF Mike Smith on Saturday. Has been working regularly for his first start in the U.S. for trainer Appleby but jockey Buick stays home.

Bourbonic – One of three probable starters for Pletcher, he was 13th in the Kentucky Derby after breaking from the widest post. He was the upset winner of the G2 Wood Memorial at 72-1 in his first graded stakes try. But this son of Bernardini will be facing long odds in here.

Overtook – Finished third in the 5 horse Peter Pan in his last start for Pletcher. If he goes, he’ll get Manny Franco in the irons.
