PP HORSE/Best BEYER TRAINER ML ODDS Fantasy Finish
1 Bourbonic – 89 Pletcher 15-1 6th
Well bred Calumet runner started career at long odds in a Belmont MSW without revealing much in the way of talent. Got maiden victory when dropped to $50K wearing blinkers for the first time. Toss his Kentucky Derby try from the 19 hole. Doesn’t have any speed, which is a Belmont winning angle but can’t totally dismiss for a piece. Can he get the ‘biggest’ piece? LONGSHOT
2 Essential Quality – 100 Cox 2-1 2nd
Raced wide through much of his fourth place finish in the Kentucky Derby on a day when speed was holding. BSF has steadily improved with each race and his 100 in the Kentucky Derby is his best to date. This will be a much easier race for him as the deserved favorite and Cox is sending out 33% winners at Belmont. Should be right there at the wire.
3 Rombauer McCarthy 3-1 1st
Preakness winner loses Prat who committed to riding for O’Neill in here. Has the field’s highest last race Beyer 102, and gets Velazquez. His El Camino Real Derby victory earned him a guaranteed spot in the Preakness. Twice beaten by Essential Quality, but peaking at the right time.
4 Hot Rod Charlie O’Neill 7-2 4th
Prat committed to ride him here before he knew he’d have the option to stick with the Preakness winner. Sire was runner up to Palace Malice in the ’03 Belmont. The fact that he was in contention from the 9 hole in the Derby says he has enough early foot to battle early but can he get the distance. Trainer O’Neill has a lowly graded stakes record on the year.
5 France Go de Ina Mori 30-1 8th
Gotta respect the fact that this homebred son of Will Take Charge who races for Japanese connections has traveled across the ocean to be here. His Preakness was a disappointing effort and he doesn’t have a recorded workout for this 1 1/2 mile test.
6 Known Agenda Pletcher 6-1 3rd
What a difference blinkers made for him three back. Took the Florida Derby defeating early Kentucky Derby favorites that day. Drew the rail in Louisville and was bottled up inside throughout but still managed to finish only 10 lengths back of the top 4 finishers. Started career here finishing second and worked a bullet 5f on Friday. Sire lost this race to filly Rags to Riches but this guy could make his papa proud on Saturday.
7 Rock Your World Sadler 9-2 5th
No doubt he will be the pacesetter in here. Was pinballed at the start in the Derby and lost all chance from the 15 hole. Sitting on a bullet :58.2 at Santa Anita a week out from the race which tells what the strategy will be. He’ll be tough on the lead but can he go the distance.
8 Overtook Pletcher 20-1 7th
Has a lone victory in a MSW at Aqueduct three back. But he’s been tested at this level in the past. Third in the Peter Pan, he earned his highest Beyer 84. Doesn’t have the numbers to bet with any confidence.
