PP Horse Trainer Odds
1 Imperative Quartarolo 30-1
Multi-millionaire son of Bernardini still grinding out wins at 9 having won his two-back start at Thistle in a NW1Y Allowance. His previous trip to the winner’s circle was in April of 2017. Sandwiched in between was his one and only trip over the Saratoga surface when he finished last in the ’18 running of the Woodward. Another Paolucci pipe dream.
2 Forewarned St Lewis 30-1
Another race filler, this Ohio bred son of Flat Out won’t know what hit him when he enters the starting gate for this G1 Breeders’ Cup Classic Challenge Series race against the likes of proven graded stakes winners. I know you can’t win if you don’t run, but as a bettor the object is to find value in the ones that at least have a chance. And this isn’t one.
3 Monongahela Servis 12-1
It would have been almost two years since his last win had he not taken the G3 Iselin at Monmouth LTO to earn a career best Beyer speed figure 102. Lezcano sticks for this and wonder if at 5 this guy could somehow have gotten a second wind at the right time to upset this field of mediocre graded stakes winners. Trying to take a big jump from G3 to G1 and Servis is sharp. UPSET SPECIAL AT A PRICE.
4 Thunder Snow bin Suroor Saeed 3-1
This will be his fifth shot at a North American stakes field when we first saw him finish last in the ’17 Kentucky Derby. Since then he was runner-up in the G1 JCGC in ’18 and was third behind Accelerate in the BC Classic that year. Winner of over $16 million, he’s bred for turf but performs better on dirt. He has tactical speed but doesn’t seem fast enough to put pressure on the true pacesetters. This will be a new distance for him and just don’t see him as the winner — again.
5 Vino Rosso Pletcher 6-1
Winner of the G1 Gold Cup LTO at Santa Anita, he’ll shorten up to the ‘Dandy’ distance he last ran in ’18 when he finished 3rd here. Which brings me to the glaring fact and ever important handicapping angle of “home field advantage,” “horse for the course,” or other phrases to mean that he’s not a fan of the Saratoga surface where he is 0 for 2. Still, it’s Pletcher and Johnny V. and he faced Triple Crown winner Justify twice in the series last year. Like the cutback in distance from his last start but not his record at the Spa.
6 McKinzie Smith 7-5
His lead up to the ’18 Triple Crown series was a mixture of emotion and frustration culminating with an injury that knocked him out of the running. Connections should count that as a blessing because he would have been destroyed by TC winner Justify. Tried the Classic off a win in the Pennsylvania Derby and was crushed. That was his only off the board finish. Comes into this looking to punch an easy ticket to the 2019 Breeders’ Cup Classic in November at Santa Anita where he has 4 wins and 2 seconds in as many starts. Deserves to be favorite here but is no cinch. CAUTION.
7 Yoshida Mott 10-1
Rosario returns for Mott having won twice when given the leg up on this Japanese bred grandson of Sunday Silence. He’s 1 for 1 over the Saratoga sand and winner of last year’s Woodward at this distance. Has enough early foot to remain in contention over a track where he’s proven himself to be G1 caliber against a suspect favorite. BIG SHOT!
8 Preservationist Jerkins 3-1
Kentucky homebred proving to be a NYRA specialist having won his last three and last five of six on the New York circuit. His last out win in the G2 Suburban was his first graded stakes victory over several proven Classic contenders including Catholic Boy. Oddsmaker has him as co-favorite at 3-1 with Thunder Snow but don’t like the fact that trainer Jerkins has sent out 8 runners without a win at the meet. Has tactical speed and cuts back but won’t be alone on the lead like he was last time. Your call.
