The Battaglia “Upset”: Great White Swallows the Field

Sent off at 15-1, Great White defied his fifth-place finish in the Leonatus to win by a neck. Jockey Alex Achard made a bold three-wide move on the far turn, hitting the lead early and gamely fending off a late charge from the heavy favorite’s stablemate, Fulleffort.
The final time of 1:46.83 for the 1 1/16 miles reflects a race where tactical positioning and surface efficiency outweighed raw dirt speed.

OPI Post-Mortem: Why the Favorites Faltered
The data leading into the race suggested a high OPI Pedigree Index for synthetic surfaces would be the deciding factor, and the results largely bore that out—with one notable exception.
- The “Speed King” Collapse: Street Beast (OPI 98.2) entered with the highest Recent Speed Figure (89) and a dominant front-running profile. However, he was pressured early by Attfield (OPI 94.3) through a sharp opening quarter of :23.88. That pace pressure, combined with our “Bounce Risk” warning, saw the favorite retreat steadily to finish last.
- The Pedigree Validation: Fulleffort (OPI 95.1) nearly validated the data, closing strongly to miss by just a neck. His high OPI Pedigree Index (94) for synthetic reflected his comfort on the surface, and he remains a primary contender for the Jeff Ruby Steaks.
- The “Mischief” Value: Our “Live Longshot” Maximus Prime outran his 30-1 odds to grab third. Despite a lower Competitive Grade, his tactical speed allowed him to stay in the hunt when the more “blue-blooded” shippers failed to fire.
- The Great White Anomaly: Great White’s victory was a triumph of the “troubled trip” theory. While his Recent Speed Figure (81) was lower than the leaders, his massive frame finally “uncorked” late. His sire, Volatile, is emerging as a surprisingly versatile influence on synthetic.
Impact on the Road to the Derby
Great White secures 20 Kentucky Derby points, leaping onto the leaderboard and proving that the path through Florence, Kentucky, remains the most unpredictable route to Churchill Downs.
