In the DRF feature Race of the Day at Gulfstream, a field of eight Florida bred 3-year-old fillies will line up to go about 5 1/2 furlongs on dirt in a $54,000 allowance for NW1X. Get free pps.

Here’s the field from the rail out with morning line odds, jockey, trainer, and comments.

  1. Mount Sinai (8-1), L Saez, Steve Klesaris – Last out winner for $16,000 maidens going this distance on the all-weather proved her even money odds two back in her maiden voyage was justified. But she steadied early and finished up by splitting the 12 horse field. The ever important “key race” angle comes into play here as the place horse from the all-weather win came back to win easily next time out. She’s stepping up but Saez sticks with her for good connections.
  2. Arrow Shape (10-1), L Reyes, Laura Cazares – Adds Lasix for what will be her 4th career start. She’s stepping up after a slow start in a $35K all-weather claimer here last time going 5. And the extra 1/2 furlong could be helpful at a price.
  3. David’s Rose (7-2), P Lopez, Edward Plesa, Jr. – Paco Lopez back aboard on this miss for the first time since a 4th place finish 5 races back in a MSW voyage. Since then she’s won two races at this distance as the ML favorite. She’ll open second choice today with hopes of sprinting clear and on a mission. Connections know how to spot them.
  4. Runaway Breeze (15-1), C Sutherland, Kevin Rice – Still seeking her second win in her 13th start, she’s made the most trips to the gate of any horse in here. Conditions are more favorable for this one as she’s staying at the same level from her last start when she earned her highest ever Beyer of 60. Couple of other angles could make her playable if you can imagine the speed falling apart. Hmm.
  5. Chacalosa (5-2), I Ortiz, Jr., Larry Rivelli – She’s one of two that trainer Rivelli will saddle in here; Started her career in Chicago on the now defunct Arlington all-weather as the winner of the Arlington Washington Lassie going 7 furlongs. Her first trip in South Florida was a tough spot and she stumbled at the break so toss that one. Doesn’t have any quickness of foot but there are no world beaters in here. And Ortiz takes the call.
  6. Firenspice (5-1), J Alvarado, Christopher Davis – One race, one win. Despite hitting the gate at the start, she closed strong to win the 5 1/2 furlong debut on the all-weather for solid connections.
  7. Naughtynaughty (9-2), J Castellano, Larry Rivelli – the other Rivelli runner, she has the look of a rabbit for her favored stablemate. She did break her maiden at this distance in an Arlington all-weather at first asking. Then tired after setting the pace in a 6 1/2 sprint at Churchill in her only other start.
  8. Poiema (6-1), L Panici, Larry Bates – Last out winner in her third start, she’s the quickest to the half-mile pole of any in here. She’s cutting back from the 6 furlong victory. But it’s tough to win right back.

Post time for DRF’s Race of the Day is scheduled for 4:42 PM ET and will go as race 9 on the 10 race card for Wednesday, January 12, 2022 at Gulfstream Park.
