In the DRF feature Race of the Day at Gulfstream, a field of nine 4-year-old and up horses will load into the starting gate to go 1 mile on dirt in a $25,000 optional claiming race for NW1X. Get free pps.

Here’s the field from the rail out with morning line odds, jockey, trainer, and comments.

  1. Little Demon (20-1), C Sutherland, Kathleen O’Connell – Florida bred 4-year-old won a state bred allowance at this distance in April. Tried $75K OC N1X twice but was overmatched. Improved at this level in last start. Two lifetime wins when breaking from this post position at Gulfstream. Going in the right direction at a price.
  2. Amount (5-1), P Lopez, Todd Pletcher – Cuts back in distance from previous two starts. Won at first asking three back. All of that said, he’s coming off a long layoff. But newly turned 4-year-old faced graded stakes winners at 3 including ’21 Florida Derby winner Known Agenda. Working good for return but last out rider lands elsewhere.
  3. Disc Jockey (7-2), I Ortiz, Jr, Saffie Joseph – 5-year-old is still looking to break through NW3L conditions. Winner of his debut for $35K claiming here going 6 1/2. And took second lifetime outing here at this distance. Beaten favorite in a stakes in third start before being sidelined for almost 2 years. On the plus side he’s working good and Ortiz will get back aboard to try and resume where the two left off a long time ago.
  4. Oriental Trigger (20-1), H Berrios, Amador Sanchez – Argentine bred 5-year-old seeks his second career win in what will be his 8th lifetime start for trainer who’s winning at a 25% clip at the meet. Finished 5th in a race over this track at this level and distance in his only North American start. Lasix is probably his friend but this is a tough spot for him to win.
  5. Tapit to the Wire (3-1), J Alvarado, Saffie Joseph – One race, one win for this Saffie Joseph trainee. Projects to be part of the pace after an easy 6 furlong victory in last. Odds maker has him as favorite over his barn buddy.
  6. Full Charge (6-1), T Gaffalione, Jack Sisterson – Broke maiden last time out in his 4th trip to the starting gate in a Churchill long distance event that became a key race when the 6th and 7th place finishers came back to win their next outings. Cuts back for first race back in 8 months. Jockey/Trainer combo winning at 25% on the year at GP. Calumet homebred beat older horses as a young 3YO. Hmm.
  7. Drive for Fun (9-2), L Saez, George Arnold – Saez takes the call on last out maiden victor who set the pace in a 1 mile MSW $121,000 claiming race at Churchill. The 3rd and 5th place finishers from that one went on to win their next outing at FG in MSW with 87 and 94 Beyers.
  8. Ludington (10-1), C Lanerie, Peter Walder – Seasoned 6-year-old Gulfstream Park specialist has won 4 times here. Distance isn’t a concern and recent Beyers are in line with the rest of the field. Toss his last race and he’ll be right on the pace at a decent price.
  9. Create Again (8-1), E Jaramillo, Gustavo Delgado – Two back was the winner at this level and distance on the lead from the break. Claimed from a second place finish off a long layoff in his last start by high percentage trainer of horses going first out for him. Off almost a month since claim and comes back at same level but with the claiming tag.

Post time for DRF’s Race of the Day is scheduled for 4:11 PM ET and will go as race 8 on the 10 race card for Thursday, January 13, 2022 at Gulfstream Park.
