Oklahoma Derby 2016: Odds and Analysis

Texas Chrome heads Oklahoma Derby 2016 Field

  1. Texas Chrome 9-5, C. McMahon – Winner of last two in Louisiana and sitting on a best of 49 bullet work :47 and change going 1/2 miles at Remington 10 days ago. Has faced the likes of Gun Runner and American Freedom both of whom would be favorite in here. 11 of 12 on the board including 7 victories. Draws nice and getting better as time goes on.
  2. Way Striking 10-1, J Talamo – Two wins from six lifetime starts including a 14 length romp at Canterbury in July in a race moved to the dirt. Came back with two fourth place finishes on the lawn there and now goes back to dirt for his longest and toughest test to date.
  3. Ready Dancer 5-1, J Velazquez – Comes in from home base in New York for Pletcher and will be making his third start in a row at the distance. 17 to 1 winner of a NW1X two back at Belmont then returned to finish fourth behind Connect, winner of the Pennsylvania Derby yesterday.
  4. Inside Straight 30-1, S. Stevens – NY bred is a four time winning son of Super Saver. And like his sire has shown an affinity for the mud having won three of the four when the track was off. Could have purchased him for $40K in May.
  5. Sticksstatelydude – 15-1, J. Rosario –  Another NW3 lifetime. Exits G3 Smarty Jones won by Awesome Slew who lead the field of the Pennsylvania Derby before succumbing to superior rivals. Rosario aboard for both wins and was beaten favorite in last. Adds ground for trainer who is 0 fer in graded stakes, routes, dirt, etc…
  6. Secret Passage 20-1, F. Geroux – Son of Curlin won first two lifetime starts over this surface before a fourth place finish behind today’s favorite in the Prelude at Louisiana Downs. Improving Beyers for this deep closer who obviously knows how to win here. Gets new rider in Geroux and could shake things up late.
  7. Fish Trappe Road 2-1, R. Bejarano – Second choice in the field and will be making his longest trip yet. Three wins, three seconds from 10 starts for $500K. Trainer Calhoun has him geared to stretch out on the lead off a bullet move :59.1 at Churchill 10 days ago. Best race was two back when he won the G3 Dwyer at 1 mile in July. Plenty of breaks in his chart.
  8. Solve 30-1, G. Franco – Broke his maiden on a yielding turf course at Fair Grounds in March. Otherwise, a couple of seconds for trainer who is 33% at the meet.
  9. Pass the Buck 20-1, I Ocampo – Two wins and a second in last going 1 mile on the turf here last month vs. NW3 lifetime.
  10. Ready Intaglio 30-1, B. Laviolette – Winner of three in a row at Northlands Park in Canada including G3 Canadian Derby but doesn’t lure rider Muir, who was aboard for each, from Canada. Six lifetime wins and a whopping $163K.
  11. Seeking Blame 15-1, B. Hernandez – Broke maiden two back for his only lifetime win. Was fifth in the Indiana Derby behind Cupid in last. The later chased the pace in the Pennsylvania Derby before throwing in the towel yesterday. Son of BC Classic winner Blame who will probably be known more for the horse that denied Zenyatta her perfect record than for his success on the track.
