Tappan Street’s Road to the 2025 Kentucky Derby: Race Progression and Key Wins
- Updated: April 25, 2025

Tappan Street’s Race Progression
Tappan Street has competed in three races leading up to the Derby, showing a clear upward trajectory despite his limited experience.
Debut and Maiden Win (December 28, 2024)
Tappan Street debuted on December 28, 2024, at Gulfstream Park in a 7-furlong maiden special weight, winning by 1 length in 1:23.08. He started mid-pack, urged inside early, then angled out at the 1/8 pole to take the lead, driving clear in a 12-horse field. This debut showcased his ability to settle and finish strongly, a trait that aligns with his sire Into Mischief’s progeny, like Authentic, who often show tactical versatility (as we saw with Rodriguez, another Into Mischief runner). The time isn’t exceptional compared to other Derby contenders’ maiden wins—Journalism ran 1:10.50 for 6 furlongs in his debut—but Tappan Street’s ability to handle a larger field early on is a positive sign for the 20-horse Derby.
First Stakes Test (February 1, 2025)
Tappan Street stepped up to graded stakes company in the Holy Bull Stakes (G3) on February 1, 2025, at Gulfstream Park over 1 1/16 miles, finishing 2nd in 1:43.25. He raced 4-3 wide, took the lead at the 5/16 pole, but was overtaken late by Burnham Square, holding off Burning Glory for second by 1 length. This race showed he could stretch out and compete at a higher level, though he couldn’t sustain his lead against a closer like Burnham Square, who we know went on to win the Blue Grass Stakes. The time of 1:43.25 matches some of the better 1 1/16-mile preps we’ve seen—like Journalism’s San Felipe win in 1:42.08—but Tappan Street’s late fade suggests he might need to improve his stamina to handle the Derby distance.
Breakthrough Grade 1 Victory (March 29, 2025)
Tappan Street’s most recent race was the Florida Derby (G1) on March 29, 2025, at Gulfstream Park over 1 1/8 miles, where he won by 1 length in 1:49.16. Settling 3-wide early, he made a move at the 1/8 pole to take the lead, clearing Sovereignty and Neoequos in a 10-horse field. This performance, as we discussed when analyzing the Florida Derby PPs, showcased his ability to rally from mid-pack, a key skill in a race like the Derby where traffic can be an issue. His time of 1:49.16 is competitive—it’s faster than Tiztastic’s 1:56.16 over 1 3/16 miles in the Louisiana Derby but slightly slower than Rodriguez’s 1:48.08 in the Wood Memorial, both over 1 1/8 miles. Beating Sovereignty, who we’ve identified as a strong closer in hypothetical Derby scenarios, adds credibility to his form.
Analysis of Progression
Tappan Street’s progression is impressive for a horse with only three starts. He’s won 2 of 3 races, with a second-place finish in his only loss, showing consistency and improvement. His times have progressed logically with the distances: 1:23.08 at 7 furlongs, 1:43.25 at 1 1/16 miles, and 1:49.16 at 1 1/8 miles, indicating he’s building the stamina needed for the Derby’s 1 1/4 miles. His running style—settling mid-pack and rallying late—mirrors successful Derby horses like Authentic (Into Mischief’s son, 2020 Derby winner in 1:59.19), suggesting he can handle the chaotic pace of a 20-horse field.
However, there are concerns. His limited experience (only 3 starts) compared to contenders like Sandman (8 starts) or even Journalism (5 starts) means he’s less battle-tested, a factor we’ve noted as a potential issue in larger fields. He’s also never raced at Churchill Downs, unlike Tiztastic, who placed twice there (2nd in the Street Sense Stakes, 3rd in the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes), giving the latter a track familiarity advantage. Finally, his Florida Derby win came in a 10-horse field, and while he handled traffic well, the Derby’s 20-horse field will be a step up, a challenge we’ve seen trip up other mid-pack runners like Sandman, who struggled with traffic in the Arkansas Derby.
Comparison to Other Contenders
Tappan Street’s Florida Derby time of 1:49.16 is competitive but not the fastest among the preps we’ve analyzed—Rodriguez’s Wood Memorial was quicker at 1:48.08, and Journalism’s Santa Anita Derby was close at 1:49.25, both over 1 1/8 miles. However, Tappan Street’s ability to beat Sovereignty, a horse we’ve pegged as a top closer in hypothetical Derby fields, gives him an edge over closers like Tiztastic, who ran a slower 1:56.16 in the Louisiana Derby over 1 3/16 miles. Compared to Burnham Square, who beat him in the Holy Bull, Tappan Street’s Florida Derby win suggests he’s surpassed his rival, especially since Burnham Square’s Blue Grass win was slower at 1:51.33.
Tappan Street’s mid-pack running style contrasts with Rodriguez’s front-running approach, which could set up a favorable pace scenario for him in the Derby, as we’ve seen speed horses like Citizen Bull potentially fade in simulations. However, he’ll need to navigate traffic better than closers like Journalism, who overcame trouble in the Santa Anita Derby but in a smaller field.
Looking Ahead to the Kentucky Derby
Tappan Street heads into the 2025 Kentucky Derby as a strong contender with a balanced profile. His Florida Derby win likely earned him 100 points, securing his spot in the field (based on typical G1 prep scoring), and his ability to settle and rally makes him well-suited for the Derby’s often hectic pace. His pedigree—Into Mischief’s speed and Distorted Humor’s versatility, with some stamina from Our Khrysty’s sire Newfoundland—supports his ability to handle 1 1/4 miles. However, his lack of Churchill Downs experience and limited starts are concerns, and he’ll need a clean trip to avoid the traffic issues we’ve seen affect other mid-pack runners like Sandman and Tiztastic.
Track conditions could also play a role. His Gulfstream Park wins were on a fast track, but if the Derby track is sloppy due to rain in Louisville his untested mud form could be a question mark. His sire Into Mischief has produced runners like Authentic who handled varying conditions.
Tappan Street’s mid-pack style makes him a solid candidate for exacta and trifecta bets, similar to what we discussed for Journalism. Pairing him with a speed horse like Rodriguez or Citizen Bull could offer value, especially if he can rally late as he did in the Florida Derby.
