Weekend Recap: Girvin wins Risen Star, Future Wager Pool 3 Odds
Girvin Wins Risen Star Stakes. Takes Top Spot on the Derby Leaderboard.
The first weekend of the Championship portion of the Road to the Kentucky Derby prep races is in the books and Girvin is the new leader on the board with 50 points after his convincing win in the Risen Star Stakes at Fair Grounds on Saturday.
Girvin, ridden by Brian Hernandez Jr., broke from the rail position in the 1 1/16 mile distance and raced in fifth down the backside, and moved up steadily around the far turn before rallying to take the lead in the stretch.
After a win at first asking in a 6-furlong sprint at Fair Grounds, Girvin was second in his next start at 1 mile on the turf in the Keith Gee Memorial on February 4.
Girvin completed the distance in the final time in 1:43.80.
Mo Town, the 3-2 favorite, finished a distant fifth.
The complete fractions for the 1 1/16 mile distance were 23.70, 47.02, 1:11.98, 1:36.70, 1:43.80 and Girvin earned a 93 Beyer speed figure in his first race on dirt around two turns.

Just a point ahead of undefeated McCraken. The final odds on the field were affected by Girvin’s impressive win in the Risen Star Stakes earlier in the day at Fair Grounds.
The final pool is scheduled for March 31 – April 2 and as we’re now into the Championship series of Kentucky Derby prep races the contenders will start to separate from the pretenders as the points starts to ring up fast.
