Fountain of Youth Stakes next up for Dornoch
- Updated: February 25, 2024
Dornoch, the Remsen Stakes (G2) winner, is poised to be the leading contender in Saturday’s Fountain of Youth Stakes at Gulfstream Park. The 3-year-old colt, trained by Danny Gargan, has been impressive with his prior two performances and is considered a frontrunner in the race towards the Kentucky Derby.
Two for Two
Dornoch boasts an undefeated record in two career starts, both of which resulted in victories. He capped off his 2-year-old season with a dominant win in the Remsen Stakes, defeating last year’s Breeders’ Cup Juvenile favorite, Forte.
Bred by WinStar Farm, Dornoch is a son of Good Magic, who himself finished second in the 2018 Kentucky Derby. His dam, Champagne Room, is a half-sister to Grade 1 winner and sire Liam’s Map.
Trainer Danny Gargan is confident in Dornoch’s abilities but acknowledges the competition in the Fountain of Youth Stakes. “He’s training well, and we’re looking forward to getting him started back,” Gargan said. “He’s a talented colt, but there are a lot of good horses in this race.”
A Win and He’s In
With 10 points, Dornoch currently sits at No. 10 on the Kentucky Derby leaderboard. A win in the Fountain of Youth Stakes would significantly boost his points total and solidify his position as a contender for the Run for the Roses.
Other notable contenders in the Fountain of Youth Stakes include:
Locked (2-1): Finished third in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile.
Victory Avenue (5-2): Undefeated in two starts, both at Gulfstream Park.
Speak Easy (6-1): Stablemate of Locked, finished second in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf.
