Dornoch wins Fountain of Youth Stakes
- Updated: March 3, 2024
In a less than thrilling contest against a field decimated by scratches, Dornoch, a three-year-old colt trained by Danny Gargan, wins the Coolmore Fountain of Youth Stakes (G2) at Gulfstream Park. Will his performance be enough to attract attention as a top contender or will it create more detractors in this crucial steppingstone on the Road to the Kentucky Derby.
Race Recap
Dornoch covered the 1 1/16-mile distance in an impressive 1 minute and 43.64 seconds. Under the expert guidance of jockey Luis Saez and trainer Danny Gargan, Dornoch secured his third consecutive victory, solidifying his position on the Road to the Kentucky Derby.
Dornoch, a full brother to the 2023 Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Mage, entered the Fountain of Youth as the 1-5 favorite. The race unfolded as follows:
- Dornoch (ridden by Luis Saez): The son of Good Magic took the lead for good at the top of the backstretch, setting fractions of 24.39 and 48.14 for the first half-mile. He remained strong in the stretch run, winning by 1 ¾ lengths.
- Le Dom Bro (ridden by Edwin Gonzalez): Tried to challenge Dornoch but settled for second place.
- Real Macho (ridden by Tyler Gaffalione): Kept in pursuit but finished behind Dornoch.

Road to the Kentucky Derby Points
Dornoch previously earned 10 points winning the Remsen Stakes last December. And earned 50 qualifying points in yesterday’s Fountain of Youth. With those two victories he now has a total of 60 points. And he is on his way to Churchill Downs and a place in the starting gate for Kentucky Derby 2024.
Field Changes and Scratches
Speak Easy was scratched after unseating jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. and running off directly following the post parade. Merit and Locked were also withdrawn from the field prior to the post parade.
The 78th running of the Coolmore Fountain of Youth showcased a spectacular 14-race program, featuring nine stakes races, eight of which were graded. Dornoch’s commanding victory solidifies his position as a serious contender on the Road to the Triple Crown
What’s next after Dornoch wins Fountain of Youth
Trainer Danny Gargan expressed his elation following Dornoch’s impressive victory in the Fountain of Youth Stakes. In a post-race interview, Gargan praised the colt’s determination and tactical prowess, emphasizing how well he handled the Gulfstream Park track.
“Dornoch is a special talent,” Gargan stated. “His pedigree speaks for itself, being a full brother to last year’s Kentucky Derby winner, Mage. He’s got the heart of a champion.”
Regarding Dornoch’s next move on the Road to the Kentucky Derby 2024, Gargan remained coy but hinted at a strategic approach:
“We’ll assess his recovery and see how he comes out of this race,” Gargan explained. “The Florida Derby is certainly an option, given its significance and the points it offers. However, we’ll also consider the Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland. Our priority is to keep him fresh and primed for the big dance at Churchill Downs.”
As racing enthusiasts eagerly await the unfolding drama of the Triple Crown season, Dornoch’s connections are undoubtedly weighing their options. One thing is certain: this talented colt has stamped his authority on the Derby trail, and the racing world will be watching closely as his journey continues.
