Bio

Keen Ice. What do you say about a horse who has only won two races in his life, but one of them happens to be the G1 Travers Stakes at Saratoga when he beat the 2015 Triple Crown winner American Pharoah.

Prior to and since then Keen Ice has been an “also ran” against the best older horses running in North America, never able to catch up to any of them at the wire as he did in the Travers.

Trained by Dale Romans for the first 16 races of his career, Keen Ice was transferred to the barn of current trainer Todd Pletcher in April of 2016 off of back-to-back losses at Meydan in the Al Maktoum Challenge and the Dubai World Cup when he faced California Chrome.

In the hands of Pletcher, Keen Ice returned to the track for the first time after a 6 month layoff in an optional claiming allowance at Belmont as the odds on favorite going 1 mile. The race was an obvious prep for his next out in the Breeders’ Cup Classic where he finished 3rd beaten 11 lengths by Arrogate and California Chrome.

In his most recent start, he was again made the odds-on favorite to win the G3 Harlan’s Holiday at Gulfstream Park on December 17, 2016 but was once again denied a trip to the winner’s circle by his stablemate Stanford.

What do you say about him? It’s a horse race…anything can happen.
