PP Horse Trainer Odds Wiz Capper Comments
He Takes Charge M. Casse 20-1  Maiden winner LTO, takes big step up for 24% trainer at the meet. Comes from far back and would be a surprise vs. experienced graded company.
Free Drop Billy D. Romans 9-2  Nothing but graded races on his chart since his maiden score at first asking. Was beaten by a bunch in the BC Juvenile behind Good Magic but returned LTO here in the Holy Bull to be second 8 clear of the show horse. Romans is 18% at the meet but only 9% in graded stakes on the year. This one looks to be a cut below the top in this year’s crop of 3-year-olds.
Peppered R. Baker 30-1  Hasn’t been out since last Nov. when 12th in the KYJC behind Enticed. Started career at Woodbine where he fared better on synthetics. Trainer is 0 for 9 in graded tries. Pass
Strike Power M. Hennig 4 – 1  Two for two sprinting beginning with 8 length maiden score here in Dec. followed by an easy win in the G3 Swale LTO going 7/8 miles. Stretches out for first time and will be on the lead from the start. Trainer is 31% this meet at GP but his sprint/route ratio is 0/31. Will face pressure from the far outside runner in biggest test to date.
Storm Runner D. Romans 15-1  Team Valor runner broke maiden at CD last Nov. in race called off the turf. Returned in defeat on turf here two back before making the switch to dirt to get a win LTO in an OC$75K by a neck when beating Mississippi who did not go in Holy Bull. Expect continued improvement for this guy as he continues on the ‘dirt’ road towards the Derby.
Good Magic C. Brown 7-5  The long awaited return of the BC Juvenile winner will happen here. Was second twice before his upset win over early Derby favorite Bolt d’Oro who has now slipped behind McKinzie in early Derby action. Son of Curlin is the rightful favorite in this one. But if he stumbles the Derby is a wide-open affair. Except for one or two in here, the rest of the field should be also ran’s.
Gotta Go I. Wilkes 10 – 1  Beat Bravazo at CD last Oct. from off the pace. Switched strategies next time out from the rail in the KYJC and got into trouble in the first turn. Ran best race LTO in the 7F Swale when trailing through 3/4 before closing nicely to get second behind Strike Power who is second choice in here.
Marconi T. Pletcher 8 – 1  First three starts of career were at 1 1/8 miles at Aqueduct. And his running style appears to need the longer distances so cut back in here will be a challenge in a race without a ton of speed. Was 3rd LTO behind Avery Island and Firenze Fire in the Withers. Right connections to upset the favorite.
Machismo A. Quartarolo 15 – 1  4th time was the charm for this guy who broke maiden LTO by 11 here sprinting. Returned with the best of 39 bullet a week ago. But that won’t be enough to turn the tables on graded company in first out vs. winners for low percentage connections.
Promises Filled D. Romans 20 – 1  Son of Shackleford has speed and will need it to clear from the outside. Gets top jock in IO Jr. for Romans who has three shots in here. Won first two before taking the show spot LTO in the KYJC. And his effort here should expose that races top two as also ran’s on this year’s Derby trail.
