Keeneland – Race 9
Here’s the field from the rail out with morning line odds, jockey, trainer, and comments for the Lexington Stakes 2022:
- Midnight Chrome (20-1), Jose Ortiz, John Servis – Winner of 1 in 6 tries, this son of Kentucky Derby winner California Chrome will need all the help he can get in here. Connections added blinkers two back to finish third in the Remsen behind Mo Donegal to end his 2YO campaign. And Lasix didn’t help in his last start — a 1 mile turf event at Gulfstream. No Lasix in 3YO stakes races in Kentucky but new rider could help him start to figure things out.
- In Due Time (3-1), P Lopez, Kelly Breen – Won two of his first three races with Lasix. And passed the test without it finishing second in the G2 Fountain of Youth in his last start behind Simplification who is in the Top 10 on the leaderboard. Owns highest speed figures for this race and expect a big effort in a mediocre field of hopefuls.
- We All See It (15-1), Luis Saez, Eddie Kenneally – Indiana Downs maiden winner in third career start with the help of Lasix. Was a last out winner for OC50 at the Fair Grounds earning his highest BRIS speed figure 89 by a head. Appears Lasix is his friend and he won’t get it here.
- Ethereal Road (10-1), V Espinoza, D. Wayne Lukas – Gets Derby winning rider to assess his talent after failing to show he belongs in last weekends Blue Grass Stakes. Not sure he’ll run, but his second place finish behind Un Ojo two back in the Rebel must have “Coach” wondering what if. Note that he was an easy winner of a MSW at this distance three back at Oaklawn — but that was with Lasix.
- Howling Time (15-1), J Talamo, Dale Romans – Won first two starts at Churchill for same connections. But he failed to go on in the KYJC behind Smile Happy and White Abarrio, finishing 5th. Running lines say he was never in contention in the FOY last time out but that was his first start of the year. Toss that effort and he should show vast improvement in a soft race.
- Skate to Heaven (30-1), D Cohen, Roberto Diodoro – Earned his first trip to the winners circle last time out against maidens at Oaklawn going 1 mile. Finished second three back at same distance. Looks to be a one run sprinting type.
- Major General (4-1), I Ortiz, Jr, Todd Pletcher – Pletcher doesn’t ship for fun. Treat this guys last place finish after stumbling at the start in the Tampa Derby last time out is a non-starter. He’ll wear blinkers and will be tough to beat in here.
- Strava (20-1), T Gaffalione, Dallas Stewart – Maiden winner at first asking here last October gives him some points for home field advantage. Was third in his last start at Fair Grounds behind Cyberknife who took the Arkansas Derby next time out. This guy is a huge price in here all things considered. Which either means that Cyberknife is a cut below the rest of the contenders for the Derby or this guy is well below the rest of this field. I’ll take the later, but this guy has a shot in here adding blinkers.
- Tawny Port (5-2), F Geroux, Brad Cox – Morning line favorite has two wins and a second in three starts over the Turfway Park all-weather. Was 5th two back in the G2 Risen Star behind current Derby favorite Epicenter in his only dirt start. Geroux returns and he’ll cut back to try and earn the 20 points he’ll need to have a long shot chance of making the starting gate on Derby Day.
- Dash Attack (10-1), F Prat, Kenneth McPeek – Regular rider Cohen opts for last out maiden winner Skate to Heaven who has this race’s highest last out SF. But fear not for Prat is riding 25% winners already at this short meet. Note his two wins were at Oaklawn going 1 mile on off tracks — so there’s that.
- Call Me Midnight (6-1), J Graham, Keith Desormeaux – He’s tied with Skate to Heaven for best dirt speed of all entries in this race. And he shocked the Lecomte two back defeating Epicenter before failing to repeat in the Louisiana Derby. Wonder what blinkers on would do for him.
Post time for DRF’s Race of the Day is scheduled for 5:16 PM ET and will go as race 9 on the 11 race card for Saturday, April 16, 2022 at Keeneland.
