Free Robert B. Lewis Stakes past performances for Saturday, February 2, 2019

Heavy rain expected in SoCal throughout the day on Saturday. That’s on top of the already poured rain that has soaked the region for the past week. This field of six Kentucky Derby hopefuls will come together for this race from the top barns stabled at Santa Anita and seeking to pad their chance of earning their way into the starting gate for the big dance on Derby Day.

Without further delay, here’s the field competing for the top prize of 10 points on America’s Road to the Kentucky Derby.

The Official Field for the Robert B. Lewis Stakes (G3)

PP Horse Trainer Odds
1 Kid Cantina Librado Barocio 20-1
Started with training wheels at Golden Gate over the fake stuff taking advantage of the added distance to win going 1 mile in his second start. Switched barns to come south for his debut on the big stage at Del Mar where early trouble clouded his past performance running line in an OCN1X for $80K over a wet-fast track. Earned his best Beyer 82 LTO at SA when second sprinting 6 panels. He’s the California son of the Maryland bred Richard’s Kid who was a long distance specialist on the SoCal circuit throughout his career. This guy might show up late for a piece.
2 Magnificent McCool Doug O’Neill 8-1
Maiden winner last time out in his sixth trip to the track and first with Prat who returns in the saddle for the Lewis. He’ll cut back in distance from that turf score and returns to the dirt (albeit sloppy) where he showed speed the time before wearing blinkers to finish second but no match for the winner. Could find himself in a speed duel with Mucho Gusto or Prat could try to rate for a better chance to be there in the end.
3 Easy Shot Keith Desormeaux 8-1
Won a MC$80K two back as the favorite with the brother Desormeaux up but his price jumped to nearly 90-1 and ran to it last time out in the G3 Sham won by Gunmetal Gray who returns for this. That experience has to be worth something and as the only other runner to exit the Sham he should make a better showing over the slop today.
4 Gunmetal Gray Jerry Hollendorfer 9-5
Won the Sham here with HOF jockey Smith aboard for the first time in his last start giving him two career wins at 1 mile. Before that he twice faced current Derby favorite Game Winner finishing second three races back off a maiden score. And was fifth in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile before the Sham. He doesn’t have the early foot that the favorite to his outside has but he’s got the right style to upset in here. Fifth on the leader board with 14 points he should add to that and possibly move into second place.
5 Mucho Gusto Bob Baffert 8-5
We’ve never seen a morning line that has co-favorites to start the wagering. So one of these has to open lower than the others. Baffert will send this slight favorite out with two wins and a second in three starts last year. Earned four points in the Los Alamitos Futurity when runner-up to stablemate Improbable who is currently 8th in points earned on the road to Louisville. Has all the right stuff to go the distance in here on the probable off-track.
6 Nolo Contesto John Sadler 5-2
First trip to the track is a toss as he was bumped at the start and Rosario lost an iron early in the race. That was sprinting 3/4 miles and only lost by five lengths. Returned next time out to take a 1 miler MSW crossing the wire first with a 94 BSF with Rosario who may have found his mount for the Derby if successful today. Son of Pioneer of the Nile, winner of this race in 2009, has a BIG shot to earn his first points towards the Derby. RESPECT despite his first attempt after maiden victory.
