2016 Wood Memorial Analysis and Selections
2016 Wood Memorial – G1, Purse $1 million, Distance is 1 1/8 miles
- Shagaf – Back on the main track after his inner track win in the Gotham last month. Earned lifetime best 99 Beyer in maiden voyage victory here last November. Shadwell home bred should get better the longer he goes. Undefeated in 3 starts and the deserved favorite.
- Adventist – Broke maiden on inner going 6f by 11 in a MSW then 3rd in two G3 races for Gyarmati including the show spot in Gotham. Consistent and should like the switch to main track for a piece today.
- Trojan Nation – Maiden comes in from California where he faced Rebel winner Cupid two back in February. Best Beyer is an 87 which is considerably lower than the top three in here. Over matched.
- Tale of S’avall – Looked promising when entered in the G1 Champagne after his maiden win sprinting at Saratoga last August. Made the lead on the sloppy Belmont surface that day and rightfully tired going 8F. Rested and returned to finish 5th in Tampa Derby. Toss that effort and he looks like a competitor in here at 20 to 1.
- Flexibility – NY bred is the other Brown runner who broke maiden at first asking vs. state bred’s. All graded stakes since and earned his best number in the G2 Remsen here at the distance last November when 2nd to Mohaymen. Switch back to main track today is a plus after two month layoff. 8 to 1 and the wildcard.
- Matt King Coal – Won his last two, a maiden win at Belmont and earned this fields highest Beyer 101 next time out in an OCNW1X for Rice who is 27% winners at the meet. 3 to 1 morning line price is generous for this speedy guy who faces his toughest test to date.
- Dalmore – Son of Colonel John comes in from California off maiden score going two turns at Santa Anita. Finished 2nd in a $65K claiming race at Saratoga last August going 6f. Tough test for sure.
- Outwork – Pletcher runner was 2nd to stablemate Destin in Tampa Derby last time out. Broke maiden at Keeneland last April going 4 1/2. Followed that with a win at 6f in a Tampa OCN1X by 4 after a 10 month break. Improving runner draws widest and will have company on the front end.
Selections: 1 – 8 – 2
