A field of eight fillies and mares will go the about 6 1/2 furlongs on the downhill turf course in the G3 $100,000 Las Cienegas Stakes as the winner of the DRF feature Race of the Day at Santa Anita.
Trainer Ruben Alvarado hasn’t missed a beat since taking over the training duties for horses previously under the care of local trainer Peter Miller.
Alvarado, longtime assistant to Miller, stepped up to the role as trainer of record after Miller announced he was stepping away from training after a series of fatal injuries to horses in training at San Luis Rey Downs and Santa Anita.
In his press release, Miller stated that his decision was a personal one and had nothing to do with the any possible regulatory action against him that may have been under consideration by racing officials.
In light of the actions taken by The Stronach Group, owners of Santa Anita and San Luis Rey Downs, against trainer Jerry Hollendorfer, it may have been Miller’s intention to get ahead of any pending action.
