Aqueduct: One turn benefits Sharp Azteca in Cigar Mile

Aqueduct Race Track Banner

Picking winners at Aqueduct in the winter can be summed up in a word. Speed.

So when Sharp Azteca takes to the track for Saturday’s G1 $750,000 Cigar Mile, he’ll bring a record of success as a speedy runner who’s won a couple of G2 and G3 races, but still looking for the G1.

In his last start going two turns in the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile at Del Mar, he was narrowly defeated after battling for the lead to finish second, a 1/2 length behind the winner Battle of Midway.

Sharp Azteca best in one turn mile races

One mile races at Aqueduct are run around one turn, where he’s been in the money in all eight starts at the distance, including five wins, for over $1 million in earnings.

Trained by Jorge Navarro, Sharp Azteca is the four-year-old son of the New York bred stallion Freud, who is known for speed, but not for distance. But unlike his sire, Sharp Azteca was bred in Kentucky and has shown he can carry his speed.
