Handicapping the Race

Global Magician is 3 to 1 favorite early. He’s a non-winner of 2 lifetime and has failed to find the winner’s circle in 6 previous attempts on the lawn. Gets a new rider in Triple Crown winning jockey Espinoza who is batting almost 20% when riding for trainer Miller. Shed the hood two back but the jury is still out on the equipment change as his performance was similar to his previous 9 races in which he’s consistent at hitting the board. Earned a 78 Beyer in last race at SA down the hill in similar company. The winner of that race came back to win next out. Global Magician was second in a Summer sprint at Del Mar on Aug. 29 in cheaper conditions while beating third place finisher Law Dog who also goes in here today.

Law Dog is a 5 YO son of Unusual Heat who is 4 for 19 on the turf but hasn’t won since a 5 furlong sprint at Churchill in June of ’14 for a $25K claiming tag. He’s listed at 5 to 1 in the morning line and it should be noted that he’s 0 for 3 at Del Mar.

Signature Cat draws the 1 hole for trainer D’Amato who is 32% winners at the meet. Maldonado will ride today and together they have struck out in two previous attempts here. He was 4th in the Aug. 29 race behind Global Magician and Law Dog and is 0 for 2 on the turf.

Noteworthy Runners

Burnaroundtheedges will be making his second lifetime start and first for former jockey turned trainer Kenneth Black. Horse broke his maiden first time out in April of ’14 at SA under Talamo who’s back for today’s race. This is a 4 YO son of Vronsky who is 8 for 66 with first-time starters on the turf and won 3 of 11 on the grass himself. Trainer is doing very well with runners first-time under his direction.

Kristi’s Copilot will be making only his 6th career start for trainer Jones who has 2 wins and a third in 4 starts at the meet. Horse was 5th after breaking slowly in the air in a 5F $72K allowance here in the summer on the grass. Followed that with a 5th place finish in a race that produced two next out winners who earned 76 and 83 Beyer’s under same conditions. Has been gelded since his last race and gets Garcia who is 0 for 5 when teaming with Jones over the last two years. The pick.
