Maxfield returns in G3 Matt Winn

Churchill Downs returns post COVID-19 with Maxfield in the G3 Matt Winn

Free Matt Winn past performances for Saturday, May 22, 2020 at Churchill Downs

Of the 12 horses entered to run in Saturday’s newest Kentucky Derby prep race the Matt Winn, only two are conditioned by trainers with at least one victory at Churchill Downs since the COVID-19 lockdown was lifted.

That’s not an indictment of the other 10 trainers or the horses they’ve entered. It’s just an observation. And, more often than not, it’s a good handicapping angle.

Here’s a look at the full field for the 1 1/16 miles Matt Winn (G3) for three-year-olds whose connections are looking to take home the top prize of 50 points and a spot on the leaderboard this late in the season.

The official field for the G3 Matt Winn

Distance: 1 1/16 miles

1 Mystic Guide Stidham 15-1
Closed out Fair Grounds meet with a strong performance going two turns for the first time. Before that, he was third in maiden voyage going 6. Stidham sent three to the track since CD reopened, hitting the board twice. Homebred son of Ghostzapper runs in Godolphin colors. He was bet down to favorite in both starts and this is a good spot to try his talent.
2 Pneumatic Asmussen 4-1
Undefeated in both career outings at Oaklawn Park, he’s conditioned by future HOF trainer Asmussen for breeder and owner Winchell Thoroughbreds. Adds a little distance to his longest 1 mile win in last. Sitting on best of 133 bullet move going 5 furlongs at Fair Grounds a two weeks ago. Short price to open in this field means he’s highly rated. Could be the one to get the points.
3 Informative St. Lewis 20-1
Finally got his maiden win two back in eighth trip to the track for trainer not known to compete on this circuit. To his credit, he tried twice in graded company Remsen and Gotham and revealed himself to be less than qualified to compete for any serious consideration on the Derby trail.
4 Celtic Striker Handal 20-1
Also tried two in graded company at the Big Apple in the Jerome and Gotham but failed miserably in each. Does have a win more than the challenger to his inside. But his past performances of sprinting to victory uncontested ends here.
5 Flap Jack Sisterson 20-1
Sire Oxbow won the Preakness during his day. On paper, he showed up better in his two starts at Arlington when going 1 mile on turf, before a victory stalking the pace going 7 furlongs on the all-weather. Bejarano takes the call but that won’t be enough to get him home first.
6 Ny Traffic Joseph, Jr. 10-1
Added blinkers to outrun his odds as the runner up last time out in the Louisiana Derby behind Wells Bayou. Shortens up for this after back to back G2 tries going longer at Fair Grounds. Should perform well in here and gets as good a rider in Paco Lopez as he’s had in previous seven races. Nice price at a distance he likes.
7 Necker Island Hough 15-5
Two for two at Churchill, so there’s that. And trainer Hough is ‘tough’ with runners here. But his Swale and Gotham efforts were on par with the others in here who competed in those graded heats. Will probably run better here than he did in New York and Gulfstream but doesn’t appear to be up to taking the top prize.
8 Crypto Cash McPeek 20-1
This is McPeek’s backyard. But he hasn’t hit the board with four starters. Corey Lanerie will get the leg up and he’s taken the jockey title 19 times at Churchill. Owns a win at Churchill on turf. And broke his maiden at Ellis (not a fan). But it’s Lanerie and McPeek exiting the Arkansas Derby ten back of Charlatan. Brisnet PPs running line from that one shows no Lasix. Expect him to be on the board somewhere.
9 Shake Some Action Cox 12-1
Cox has visited the winner’s circle with three of five. Castellano is 0 for 9 in the saddle, so far this meet. But he’s 1 for 1 aboard this guy who will LOVE the cutback in here. Double digits last time out in the Louisiana Derby behind stablemate Wells Bayou who went on in defeat to Nadal in his next start. Still like his chances to improve with Castellano at a price.
10 Maxfield Walsh 5-2
Opens as the luke warm favorite to make it three in a row after closing out 2019 with a decisive victory in the Breeders’ Futurity at Keeneland. But the two he defeated, Governeur Morris and Enforceable have been falling from proverbial grace on the Kentucky Derby leaderboard. Son of Derby winner Street Sense, he’s another from Golphin, and conditioned by a trainer with a recent win here. Broke his maiden here going 1 mile at first asking. But remember, he was sidelined with an ankle injury while training for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile at Santa Anita. He’ll make his first start since last October but connections have him sitting on go with a best of 34 bullet going 5/8’s at Keeneland in preparation for this. Looks like the right one on paper. But who did he beat in the Breeders’ Futurity? Governeur Morris exiting that one with a win in a low-level allowance at Tampa. CAUTION.
11 Attachment Rate Condie 4-1
Trained by Dale Romans who has been a leader on the Kentucky circuit for years. His early Derby hope, Dennis’ Moment, had his, and is off the Trail. Winner in the slop at Gulfstream as a maiden, this one has a shot to get some points on the board with John Velazquez who has been hot here. 50/50 chance of rain in Louisville for tomorrow could help his chances for an upset.
12 Major Fed Foley 5-1
Goes from the rail in the Louisiana Derby where he was slow from the gate and trailed through 6 furlongs, to the outside fence in here. His one-run style means he’ll have to take back behind the pacesetters and hope to find clear lanes at a shorter distance than his previous two – both G2 at Fair Grounds. Like the fact that Rosario sees fit to stick with him after his last which saw Wells Bayou get run off his feet in the Arkansas Derby behind Nadal. Trainer Foley is hit and miss with this type and 0 for 5 to date here. But like Shake Some Action and Ny Traffic, the ‘Major’ gets a chance to show his true worth. And likewise, what we can expect from Wells Bayou going forward.
