Sire Shanghai Bobby won the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile at Santa Anita in 2012. But the closest he got to the first Saturday in May, and the Kentucky Derby, was a 5th place finish behind eventual 2013 Derby winner Orb, in the Florida Derby. That was his only off the board finish in a short eight race career that included a five race win streak that began with a maiden victory going 4 1/2 at Aqueduct and ended with his 1 1/16th mile win in the BC Juvenile. Too early to tell how this son of ‘Bob’ will fare as the real running towards the 2020 Kentucky Derby goes, but his Sapling win at Monmouth isn’t the most promosing indicator. Unlike his sire, he didn’t make the BC Juvenile cut. But did earn two points in the G1 Champagne Stakes last time out to rank #12 on the Kentucky Derby 146 leaderboard — for the time being.
