2021 Florida Derby PPs, Odds and Analysis

Churchill Downs returns post COVID-19 with Maxfield in the G3 Matt Winn

The field for the Florida Derby (G1) $750,000 will go as the 14th race on a long card in Hallandale Beach, Florida.

Greatest Honour Faces Toughest Test in Florida Derby

The full field of 11 is headed by the Holy Bull and Fountain of Youth winner Greatest Honour who returns to face off against St Elias Stables Known Agenda who makes his first start since a February win in OC Allowance company going the Florida Derby distance.

Trained by Todd Pletcher, Known Agenda raced with Lasix and blinkers for the first time after a couple of mediocre efforts in the G2 Remsen and G3 Sam Davis. In a 1 1/8 miles maiden at Aqueduct in November, he was a head the better over Greatest Honour who has since turned that experience into a triple walk to the winner’s circle for another Hall of Fame trainer Claude ‘Shug’ McGaughey who’s looking to take Greatest Honour to the Kentucky Derby winner’s circle, following his first ever trip with Orb in 2013.

The field of Derby hopefuls will be racing towards the top cash prize in the graded stakes event for three-year-olds on the Road to the Kentucky Derby on May 1. In addition to the purse money, the Florida Derby will award points to the top four finishers in a 100-40-20-10 distribution.

Of the eleven horses to go postward, there are several with impressive recent performances in cluding two-time winner Soup and Sandwich, 12 length maiden winner Collaborate, and the first ever Florida Derby entry shipped in by Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert.

All said, this is going to be one of the better Florida Derby’s in recent memory. And we could see an upset in the making.

Florida Derby 2021 Probable Field

1 Nova Rags Mott 12
Exits the Sam Davis as the runner up behind Candy Man Rocket who returned to finish 11th in the Tampa Bay Derby as the favorite. Sire Union Rags was 3rd in the 2012 running of this one, and went on to win the Belmont that year. Like that he’ll carry Alvarado again in the saddle. And HOF trainer Mott is a plus. Could hit the board, but will need to land in one of the top three positions when they put up the final numbers, for him to have a chance to make the Derby. Then again, he broke his maiden at ‘Big Sandy’ and his father won the Belmont there.
2 Quantum Leap Wilkes 20
The upside, however little, is that he won at this distance in his last start. The downside, which is huge, is that he beat maidens. Trounced by two-time winner and possible KD contender Prevalence two back. Guess that’s enough for the handicapper to open him at 20 to 1. But this is the Florida Derby and he is making his first start vs. multiple winners. Pass.
3 Jirafales Delgado 30
Splitting the field at 100 to 1 in the Fountain of Youth was enough to give the connections of this first out maiden winning Florida bred something to dream about. That was the second time he faced Greatest Honour in defeat, and no doubt makes him a standout when he faces lesser company. And while the added distance in here will suit his far from off the pace style, making up a 10 to 15 length deficit for the top spot is highly unlikely.
4 Southern Passage Romans 30
When your sire is a Kentucky Derby winner, you have a chance. Only win in 8 starts was a 3 length victory in a maiden claiming race for $50K on the slop. Which, coincidentally, his sire relished in winning the 2010 Kentucky Derby. Came running for 2nd behind Prevalence last time out at long odds. Could show up big in here, but not counting on it.
5 Known Agenda Pletcher 5
The Sam Davis favorite two back, he couldn’t get going early enough and finished 5th. He crushed a small field of six going this distance in an OCN1WX for $75K getting Lasix and blinkers for the first time. The Lasix could be just a side note to his win LTO, when the real difference was the blinkers. TOP CHOICE.
6 Sigiloso Sano 30
Last 3 were turf tries beginning with a 1 mile maiden score here. Regular rider Zayas sees a better opportunity on Jirafales. And he’s probably right. Pass.
7 Greatest Honour McGaughey 6 to 5
The local star of the 3YO class of contenders at Gulfstream. He’s won three in a row starting with a first over the track trip in 1 1/16th miles maiden victory. Added back to back graded wins in the Holy Bull (G3) and the Fountain of Youth (G2). His qualifications can’t be denied but the fact that he’s adding ground and facing nemesis Known Agenda who beat him in his New York finale last November, he’s vulnerable today. Second best.
8 Soup and Sandwich Casse 20
Winner of both career starts, he’s taking a big step up in here. Casse upset the Tampa Bay Derby with longshot Helium who shipped in from Woodbine and was making his first trip on dirt.  He’ll saddle this guy who beat just two others in his last start at Tampa Bay going wire to wire. The leg up goes to Johnny V. for his assessment of his ability to mix it up with Florida’s best. Could show up for a piece of the pie to go with his meal.
9 Collaborate Joseph 6
Twelve length winner in a maiden miler here LTO. He’ll face stiff competition for the first time. Looks like he’ll find himself on the lead. But how far he’ll go is the big money question. Short opening price says he’s on the insiders list of horses to watch. But he’ll have to be something special to take on winners for the first time. Tote will tell the tale. If he’s bet down lower from his opening, he could be that special.
10 Speilberg Baffert 4
50 to 1 to open in KDFW Pool 5, he’ll be second choice in here. Gotta love that Baffert is sending his first ever Florida Derby entry as the son of Union Rags, while trying to improve on his sires 3rd place finish in the 2012 Florida Derby. Exits the Southwest when 2nd to Essential Quality. And was 11 lengths back of stablemate Medina Spirit two back in the Lewis which produced Louisiana Derby winner Hot Rod Charlie. Will perform well in here and would not be a surprise as the UPSET SPECIAL.
11 Papetu Sano 15
His first two lifetime starts were winning efforts here last summer. But his last 5 in graded company showed his true colors. Twice defeated by Greatest Honour, he’ll get his 5th different rider since his debut. If there’s any upside, it’s the added distance. Nah, nevermind, there’s no upside to him.
